The purpose of this competition is to help everyone in our family be as healthy as they can in a friendly and supportive, albeit competitive, fashion. Every month there will be a single competition leading up to a single grand competition. The monthly competitions will change every month, but we will also be able to earn points throughout the year on a consistent basis. The person who accumulates the most points at the end of the year will be the grand winner. Suggestions on the prize(s) is more than welcome. Below is the breakdown for the planned monthly competitions as well as ways to accumulate points on a regular basis. While the January competition is essentially set in stone (seeing as how it starts in two days), I'm open to suggestions otherwise.
Everyone is responsible for tracking all of their own points and progress and posting their results by the first Sunday of the next month!!!
January--Consistency
Longest consecutive streak of days with at least 30 minutes of physical activities
February--Calories
Most days under personal net calorie goal
March--Flexibility
Most minutes spent on stretching exercises
April--Strength
Most sessions of strength training
May--Cardiovascular
Most days involving cardio exercises
June--Freshness
Most meals involving fresh fruits and/or vegetables (max two per day towards total)
July--Outdoors
Most points from outdoor activities (1 point for each normal workout moved outside, 3 points for each extended outdoor activity such as a hike or bike ride)
August--Cardiovascular
Most minutes spent on cardiovascular activities
September--Strength
Most points from working major muscle groups (1point per cumulative full set of major muscle groups)
October--Weight Loss
Successfully achieving personal weight loss or maintenance goal (obviously there could easily be multiple winners this month)
November--Flexibility
Most points from stretching major muscle groups (1point per cumulative full set of major muscle groups)
December--The End
I'm open to suggestions here, but basically no additional monthly competition. Just a push for the highest total points.

I was just thinking about this competition during dinner (free at the Residence Inn where we are staying) and surprise! this was in my email when I got back tho the room! I have a couple of questions:
ReplyDelete1. The 10 points per pound lost--we don't get those until the end of next year, right? Otherwise I'll be accumulating lots of points for losing the same 5 pounds over and over again each month :)
2. The 1 point for each 30+ minute workout--is that max 1 point per day or can I break a 60 minute workout into two 30 min workouts to earn 2 pounds? I'm asking just so I'm on the same playing field as everyone else.
As for the grand prize...I'm thinking an all expense paid 2 week vacation in Hawaii. Or maybe we should keep this up over many years and have a traveling winner's trophy.
Thanks, Amy for setting this up. Seeing we have to post the first Sunday of every month makes me wish you had made a notation for that on the calendar you just made :)
First off, thanks for commenting! Now to answer your questions:
Delete1-Yes, those are only calculated at the end of the year. These are for pounds that you have lost and kept off.
2-It's really supposed to be for having a workout rather than the length. So max one a day. Actual minutes go towards certain monthly competitions.
3-grand prize. i like the hawaii thing. You're bank rolling that right? But the traveling trophy sounds good, too.
